CAVITE CITY, Cavite (PIA) — Health officials in Cavite City are warning the public against entering floodwaters which pose a risk of contracting leptospirosis.
At an emergency meeting with the Liga Ng Mga Barangay last September 2, Dr. Jeffrey dela Rosa, head of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU), sounded the alarm about the rising leptospirosis cases in the city.
In a statement, CESU Cavite City advised residents to refrain from getting into floodwater to prevent contracting the virus.
As of September 1, the city has reported eight (8) leptospirosis cases, with three (3) currently being treated in local hospitals and one (1) in recovery. Meanwhile, four (4) have already died due to complications.
The Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH CHD) CALABARZON has also advised the public against bathing or playing in floodwaters to avoid risk exposure to leptospirosis. In cases where exposure and getting submerged in floodwater will become unavoidable, the DOH advises consultation at health facilities within 24 to 48 hours.
Although a known antibiotic for preventing and treating mild leptospirosis, the DOH reminds that patients must first consult with a doctor for proper dosage and drug administration.
